Before adding products to your website, you need to establish the basic category structure. Every product must be assigned to at least one category. However, you can also add categories on the go while creating a product. The category structure of the catalog is reflected by the main top navigation of the store.
Categories are accessed in the Magento CMS by following the path Catalog > Categories. On the left-hand side, the list of Categories and Subcategories is presented, and clicking on the plus sign will let you access the specific item. Magento is very user friendly and the order of these items can easily be changed by dragging them to your desired location, therefore if you require an item to be in front of another, you simply drag it to the desired place. Saving it will update the look on your website.
Adding and editing a category
Adding a root category or a Subcategory is very straight forward. You simply need to click the Add button and fill out all the fields.
You can access a Category or Subcategory by clicking on it. The editor is simple to use, and different actions can be done, like enabling the category, include it in the menu, name it, assign an image to it, or write a description. You can also enhance the look of the page by choosing different CMS blocks. The options here are various and you can choose from many predefined and well-thought-of items.
The Display settings will help you set what the Category page will show. The Display mode menu gives you the option to show featured Products only, or you have the options to choose Products and static blocks (banners, widgets, plus products) or only static blocks.
Categories can be optimized for search engines, and you can assign a specific URL and meta tags.
The category Products section lets you see the products that have already been associated with this category. If you want to associate a product with this category, you simply need to check the box, specify a position for it, and save the selection. If your category page has a filter of recommended products, then the lower the position number you assign to that product, the higher it will be positioned in the list of products.
The Design section helps users specify the theme of the category page. You have the simple option to follow the template of the parent category, or, if you want this category page to look different than the other ones, you can choose to specify its own look.
